Long-distance movie night ideas: 21 ways to make it feel like the same sofa

Watching the same film is the easy part. What makes it feel like a night together is everything around it: the ritual, the little shared details, and the talk afterwards. Here's what couples who do this every week actually do.

How to actually press play together

The simplest way is a countdown on a call: both load the film and press play on three. It works everywhere, but it drifts, and every pause means another countdown. Screen sharing Netflix, Prime or Disney+ usually shows a black screen because of DRM (why). A sync extension avoids both: each of you plays your own copy, and play, pause and skip stay together. The full comparison is in our guide to watching movies together long distance, and there are service guides for Disney+ and Prime Video.

We make Herae for these nights

Press play once and it plays for both of you, with a video call built in, a shared watchlist for the choosing (idea 3), and the moments you both reacted to kept on a timeline of your own (ideas 18 and 19). It needs Chrome on a computer, and your first two movie nights are free.

Questions people ask

How do you have a movie night in a long-distance relationship?

Pick a film available to both of you, get on a call, and start it together, with a countdown or a sync extension. Then make it an evening: the same snack, a set time, and ten minutes afterwards to talk about it.

What do you do after the film?

Stay on the call: best scene, worst character, a rating each. Keep a shared record, and over months it becomes a diary of your nights.

What if we're in very different time zones?

Fix a weekly slot that works for both, and let the person for whom it's later pick the length. A shorter film at a good hour beats a long one at 2am.

More than films: 30 things to do on FaceTime together.
