How to watch movies together long distance (without the black screen)
There are three ways couples do this. Each has one job it's good at and one that ruins the evening. Here's which is which, including the one we make.
1. The countdown on a call
You both open the film, get on a call, and someone says "three, two, one, play". It's the most common method for a reason: it's free, it works on every service and every device, and it takes no setup.
- Wear headphones, or mute while the film plays, or you'll hear each other's audio half a second late.
- Pick one person to call the pauses. Every pause needs another countdown.
- Expect to drift by a few seconds over a two-hour film, more if one of you buffers.
2. Screen sharing (Discord, Google Meet, Zoom, WhatsApp)
One of you plays the film and shares the screen on a call. It needs only one subscription. This is also where most people hit the black screen.
Why the screen share is black
Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and most paid services protect their video with DRM. When a screen-capture tool asks for the picture, the browser hands it a black frame. That isn't a bug in Discord or Meet, and it isn't your settings. The service is doing what it's designed to do. Free sites and YouTube usually share fine.
Even when it works, the person watching gets a re-encoded copy of your screen. Quality depends on your upload speed (Discord caps free streams at 720p), and audio over a call is often the first thing to suffer.
3. A sync extension: everyone plays their own copy
Instead of sending the video, a sync extension sends only the timing: play, pause, skip. Each of you streams the film yourself, at full quality, and the extension keeps the two players together. There's nothing to screen-share, so nothing goes black.
The catch that applies to every tool here: each of you needs access to the title, usually your own account on that service, and the title has to be available in both your countries. No sync tool can fix "not available in your country".

Which one should you use tonight?
- Watching on a TV or phone: the countdown.
- Something on YouTube or a free site, one laptop: screen sharing is fine.
- Netflix, Prime, Disney+ or anything paid, both on a computer: a sync extension. Screen sharing will go black.

Can we watch Netflix together if we live in different countries?
Only if the title is available in both countries. Sync tools keep your own players in step; they can't add a title to a country's catalogue. Pick something both of you can see.
Does my partner need to pay for anything?

Does it work on a phone or TV?
