Why is Prime Video black when I screen share?

Prime Video protects its video with DRM, so Discord, Google Meet and Zoom receive a black frame instead of the picture. Each person playing Prime on their own account with a sync extension avoids it.

Do both of us need Prime to watch together?

Q: Does Prime Video still have Watch Party?

No. Amazon ended Prime Video Watch Party on 2 April 2024, and removed it from the app without an announcement. Couples now use a countdown on a call or a browser extension that keeps two players in sync.

Amazon shut down Prime Video Watch Party on 2 April 2024. If the button is missing, that's why. Here's what works now for two people in different places.

1. A countdown on a call

Both open the same title, get on a call, press play on three. Free, works on TVs and phones, drifts over a long film, and needs a new countdown after every pause.

2. Screen sharing (and why Prime goes black)

Prime Video uses DRM, so when Discord, Google Meet or Zoom asks for the picture, the browser hands over a black frame. That's by design, and no setting fixes it for Prime.

3. A sync extension: each of you plays your own Prime

Each of you plays Prime Video on your own account, at full quality, and a browser extension keeps play, pause and skip together. Teleparty, SyncUp and Herae work this way. For all of them, each of you needs Prime and the title must be available in both your countries.
