Find someone to watch movies with online
Watching alone is fine until a film ends and there's nobody to talk to about it. If your friends don't like what you like, or live in a different time zone, there are a few good ways to find someone to watch with online: communities around a genre or fandom, open watch parties, and apps that match you by taste. Here's how each one works, what to watch out for, and how Herae does it.
Three ways people find a movie buddy
1. Communities built around what you watch
Fan forums, Discord servers and subreddits for a genre, a director or an anime often have movie-night threads where people agree on a film and a time. It works best when the community is small enough that you see the same names again, because that's where a regular watch partner comes from.
2. Open watch parties
Some groups run scheduled watch parties anyone can join. You get company straight away and nothing is expected of you afterwards. The catch is that parties are often big, so it's harder to actually talk to someone.
3. Matching by taste
A matching app starts from what you love, the films, shows, genres and music, and introduces you to people who share it. That makes the first conversation easy ("you liked that too?") and it's the best route if you want one or two people to watch with regularly, not a crowd.
How to stay safe
- Keep chats on the platform until you know someone. Don't hand out your number, address, workplace or school.
- Use services where both people have to agree before a chat opens, and where you can block and report.
- Never send money, gift cards or account passwords to someone you met online, whatever the story.
- Watch from your own streaming account; there's no need to share logins.
How Herae does it
Herae started as a way for couples to watch in sync from far apart, and the same sync now works for new people too:
- Taste first. You list films, shows, genres and music you love. Personality and hobbies are optional and only fine-tune who you see.
- Both say yes. Nobody can message you until you both say yes. Matching is for adults (18+), and your profile can be public or private.
- Then watch together. Pick a film in the chat, open it on the streaming site you both use, and Herae keeps your two players in step while you see each other on a call. Each person plays from their own account.
- Or join a party. Search public watch parties by the film. Some are open; some hosts approve who joins.
Honest note: Herae's matching is new, so there aren't many people on it yet. When someone who shares your taste joins, Herae tells you. Watching together needs Chrome on a computer; profiles, matches and chats also work on your phone.
Questions people ask
Is there an app to find someone to watch movies with?
Yes. Herae is a free Chrome extension and site where you list films, shows, genres and music you love, and it introduces you to people with the same taste. Nobody can message you until you both say yes, and from there the two of you can press play on the same film at the same moment and talk on a call while it runs. Matching is for adults (18+).
Is it safe to watch movies with strangers online?
It can be, with care: keep it on the platform until you trust someone, don't share your address, workplace or financial details, and use apps that let you block and report. On Herae, chats open only after both people say yes, your profile can be public or private, and blocking and reporting are built in.
Do I need to pay to find someone to watch with on Herae?
No. Making a profile, matching, chatting and joining public watch parties are free. Watching together uses Herae's free allowance, with paid plans for people who watch a lot.
What if nobody who shares my taste is there yet?
Herae is new, so the number of people is still small. When someone who fits your taste joins, Herae lets you know. In the meantime you can search public watch parties by film, or invite a friend from your link.
Can I join a watch party without knowing anyone?
Yes. Public watch parties can be searched by the film, the party name or its description. Some parties are open to anyone; others ask the host to approve you first. Private parties are never listed and are joined only from their invite link.
